NeuroStar Efficacy
NeuroStar Advanced Therapy TMS was studied in adult patients suffering from Major Depressive Disorder, all of whom had not experienced significant improvement with traditional depression treatments.
In an independent, randomized, controlled trial funded by the National Institute of Mental Health, 307 patients were treated with the NeuroStar Advanced Therapy TMS for 4 to 6 weeks, similar to real clinical context
Patients were divided into two groups:
- Low Treatment Resistance: Patients who have failed to improve their depression symptoms after a single antidepressant treatment of adequate dose and duration.
- High Treatment Resistance: Patients who have failed to improve their depression symptoms after a multiple (2-14) antidepressant treatments of adequate dose and duration.
At the end of their treatments, patients who had received NeuroStar Advanced Therapy TMS were four times more likely to achieve remission compared to patients receiving a sham treatment. 1 in 2 patients experienced significant improvement in their depression symptoms and 1 in 3 experienced complete remission. Patients treated with NeuroStar Advanced Therapy also experienced significant improvement in anxiety and physical symptoms (such as appetite changes, aches and pains, and lack of energy) associated with depression.

NeuroStar TMS FAQs
Many patients experience side effects from their medication, increasing the chance that they will stop taking them. The most common side effect with NeuroStar is mild to moderate pain or discomfort at the treatment site. For most patients this subsides within the first week of treatment.
The best way to determine if NeuroStar TMS is right for you is by speaking with your doctor or a referring psychiatrist.
In order to ensure your safety, the following general requirements will need to be met prior to receiving TMS therapy:
- Currently diagnosed with treatment-resistant depression by a psychiatrist, physician, or qualified healthcare professional
- No foreign metal in the head or metallic/magnetic implants (most dental work is safe)
Generally, the initial course (acute phase) of treatment will involve at least 36 consecutive treatment sessions over a 7 week period (treatment session is 18 minutes and 45 seconds each day from Monday to Friday) pending on your response, however, additional sessions may be needed.
